Ahhh...fear not, there are still more Jasper updates to come, but meanwhile, just a word on perspective.
Doing a solo show is an intensely personal experience, and doing this doomed "festival" here in my adopted home town of Calgary has got me thinking. Now, I just had a friend sign my passport application, and he was sadly on his way to a funeral for a 22 year old girl who was killed in a car accident when she hit a cow and it came through the windshield and killed her. There was my friend, all dressed up in a good suit, on his way to this event where 2000 other people would be cramming the church. How sad! Was my first thought. My second thought was, "2000? Hey, that's a great house." I started thinking about my solo show, my final show of three here tonight, and about the handful of people that have come out to see it in its various incarnations. I thought, "Wow, these are exactly the same people that would turn up at my funeral." Think of that, eh? Someone's gotta send out that last mass email to everyone in your address book, hundreds of names, and less than a dozen will turn up. And to be fair, at least a dozen fellow fringers showed up to my show in Thunder Bay and Edmonton. But to those who know me and turned up, either at Solocentric, or the Lab, or Random Acts, or across Canada, or here - and I am conscious of every single one of you - I am so so grateful and so glad and so touched at your friendship and support, at this time when I really need it. After all, at my funeral, it won't really matter any more.
So thank you. Sincerely.
N.
